Carpet Cleaning - How to remove stains and spots

It's important to act fast, when you stain a carpet, but even though you should be acting immediately, a short time to reflect and prepare is better than doing the wrong thing. (There are quite a few ways to make a stain permanent, see bottom of the page for things to avoid)

Carpet Cleaner Rules: This will bring the desired result

• Use a clean white, absorbent terry towel or plenty of household paper.
• Blot or tamp the spot don't brush.
• Pretest the carpet in an inconspicuous area.
• Clean the stain from the edge to the center don't spread it.
• Apply cleaner to the towel not the carpet.
• Clean with modest amounts of cleaning solution.
• Dilute the solution sufficiently, better dilute it too thin.
• Adhere to product safety and follow instructions.
• Remove the stain as soon as it is noticed.
• Remove the dirty excess before cleaning.
• Use cleaning compounds at luke warm temperature.

Carpet Cleaner Rules: Don't do any of these:

• Use a dirty or coloured rag.
• Rub, brush or scrape the spot using force.
• Pretest the carpet in the middle of the room.
• Clean the stain from side to side.
• Apply cleaners directly to the stain.
• Saturate the spot with cleaners.
• Ignore manufacturers instructions.
• Ignore the stain or leave it until later.
• Wet clean before removing the dry excess.
• Apply heat to the stain.

Even if you follow the above rules for cleaning your carpet, the result may vary. There are stains that can not be entirely eliminated. But if you act fast and sensible, you will at least be able to reduce the damage.
