When shopping for a steam cleaner you need to first be aware, that some 'stem cleaners' actually are hot water cleaners that do not produce steam at all. Most steam cleaners used by professional carpet cleaners are of this type. The true steam cleaners produce 'dry vapor' which is not a liquid but a gas. That makes it a lot easier for the heat and vapor to penetrate deep. It's also at a temperature above the boiling point and thus kills bacteria, bugs and other nasty things in your carpet quickly. Because of the high heat and the low water content, your carpet will dry nearly instantly once the application is finished, and the risk of mold growth is minimized.

It does not matter whether you chose a handheld steam cleaner or a larger stem cleaner for area rugs and large carpet surfaces, the principle is always the same. Therefore make sure that you know what you are buying and check if the machine really produces stem or dry vapor, and not only hot water.

Things To Observe When Using A Steam Cleaner

When you use a true steam cleaner that produces dry vapor steam, you need to be aware of the immense heat that is produced. Basically it's the same steam you get when using a steam iron). That means that some fibers or dyes might not be able to stand the heat and get damaged or will chage appearance. Wool or cotton wil usually not be a problem, whilst synthetic

The only drawback to SV is that because it is so hot (the temperature of steam from a steam iron), it may affect the fibers or dyes in synthetic (not made from natural materials like wool or cotton) carpets or rugs and may cloud the finish on hardwood floors. To prevent such damage, check with the floor covering manufacturer, or before doing the entire surface of a carpet, test a small area in an obscure location (normally behind or under a piece of furniture) with SV to see if the surface appears changed in any way. Rugs should not be treated with steam vapor while in place over a finished wood floor. Instead, hang the rug indoors or outdoors to avoid heating the floor while treating the rug. And be sure to read the manufacturer’s directions for safe use of the equipment.
